Tooth Extractions in Surf City, NC

tooth extraction surf cityAt Surf City Dental, we aim to do everything possible to save and preserve every tooth. However, there are times when extracting a tooth becomes essential for the greater good of your dental and overall well-being.

If you are facing the prospect of a tooth extraction, it is perfectly natural to feel apprehensive or uncertain. We empathize with your feelings and are here to reassure you that with us, you're in caring and expert hands.

Why Our Dentists Recommend Tooth Extraction

Some reasons our Surf City dentists might recommend removing a tooth include:

  • Severe tooth decay that a filling or crown cannot resolve.
  • A tooth infection that has damaged a substantial portion of the tooth.
  • Tooth overcrowding to prepare for orthodontic treatment.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth that cause pain and structural issues.

Understanding the Tooth Extraction Process

At Surf City Dental, we will always try to save your natural tooth. However, if an extraction becomes necessary, we will ensure your comfort before removing it. Here are the steps you can expect from the extraction process:

Anesthesia

The first thing we’ll do is apply a local anesthetic to completely numb your tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. You won’t feel any pain during the procedure.

Tooth Removal

Next, we’ll use special dental instruments to loosen your tooth from its socket and remove it. We can section it into smaller pieces if it can’t be extracted in one piece.

Wound Care

Once your tooth is removed, we will clean the area and place stitches to help the tissue heal. We’ll also have you bite down on gauze to encourage a blood clot to form.

I feel so cared for at Surf City Dental!

I feel so cared for at Surf City Dental! I was very nervous about a long procedure today. They listened to my concerns and made the experience so much better with the use of nitrous and a lot of TLC. They even brought me a blanket! Dr. Full and the rest of the staff were top notch and very understanding! Prior to my procedure, my hygienist, January did an excellent job and it was she who shared my apprehension to my doctor. Thank you, January!!

Before your procedure, we administer a strong local anesthetic to numb the area for a pain-free experience. Our dentist and team monitor you during your procedure to ensure you are comfortable. If you need more anesthetic or nitrous oxide to help you relax, just let us know. We are here to help you.

Within your private treatment room, we create a calming environment where you can rest your head on a soft neck pillow and snuggle with a cozy blanket. With controlled temperature, soft lighting, and calming music, you can expect a completely stress-free experience.

Wisdom Teeth: To Remove or Not to Remove?

Wisdom teeth begin to emerge in the late teens or early 20s and often bring complications. Because they are the last teeth to appear, there may not be enough space in the jaw for them to grow in correctly. This means they can crowd existing teeth, come in at odd angles, or get stuck or impacted in the gums.

Our dentists don’t automatically remove all wisdom teeth, especially if they’re not problematic. They will review your unique situation and discuss the pros and cons with you before making a recommendation.

Tooth Extraction Technology

Nitrous Oxide or "Laughing Gas"

Commonly known as "laughing gas," nitrous oxide is a mild sedative mixed with oxygen to ensure a comfortable and anxiety-free dental visit. Delivered through a mask placed over your nose, you'll breathe in the gas and quickly experience a feeling of relaxation and well-being. Delivery of nitrous is always carefully monitored by our dental team and tailored to suit your needs.

Nitrous oxide doesn't just ease anxiety; it also minimizes pain sensations and the passage of time, making appointments seem to fly by. For you, this translates into a calm, worry-free experience and is especially beneficial if you feel uneasy about dental appointments. An added advantage is that the effects wear off swiftly after the mask is removed, allowing you to resume your daily activities, including driving yourself home.
